An elderly countrywoman, dressed in a plain blue dress, red cloak and enormous black bonnet, stands holding a book of Wesley’s Hymns, and addressing a smart young jockey. She asks him if there are any (Methodist) meetings in the town and he cheekily replies Yes Ma’am two a year. Spring and October. Behind the young man, in the doorway of The Ram Inn, stands a fat, grinning John Bull, a laughing young buck and a pretty young woman. In the background is a horse race on Newmarket Heath and a signpost labelled Devil’s Ditch. BM 10920.
