PIRANESI, Laura, Rome 1755-1785.
Daughter of GB Piranesi, she died prematurely at the age of 29 Not much is known about her etchings, numbering 20 views of Rome much in the style of her father, and another 35 plates after artists of 16th. – 18th. Centuries. The views here, from the former collection, show a remarkable maturity of style. It is clear that she has assimilated much from her father, shown by her composition and her use of figures and foliage to add greater expression to her views. They show a more finely etched detail than her father, she was evidently creating her own style. Her exquisite etchings are quite rare now and we can only guess at what she might have achieved had she lived longer
