A rare, informally posed portrait of the members of the Phipps family. On the left sits the soldier and statesman Henry Phipps first Earl of Mulgrave (1755-1831), next to him sits his friend the art patron and founder of the National Gallery Sir George Beaumont (1753-1827), and on the right are Mulgrave’s two brothers, with Edmund seated at a table turning over the leaves of a book of engravings. The table is covered with an elaborate ‘turkey’ cloth and in the background is a draped curtain.
