A happy scene in an arcadian landscape. In the centre of the design a small group of damsels, sitting beside a fountain under a grove of trees, flirt with a handsome young man. Lancret (1690-1743), a pupil of Gillot and Watteau, is chiefly known as a painter of ‘fêtes galantes’, and much of his work was purchased by Frederick the Great of Prussia and Catherine the Great of Russia.
