A half length portrait of Ambroglio Spinola (1569-1630), Commander in Chief of the Spanish Armies in the Netherlands. He faces the spectator, wearing armour with a white ruff, and with the Jewel and Order of The Golden Fleece around his neck. He holds a baton in his right hand and rests the other on his plumed helmet. The grisaille painting by Van Dyck, bought by the Montagu family at the sale of Sir Peter Lely’s paintings in 1682, is in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch at Boughton House.
