A charming full length portrait of the daughters of Philip 2nd Earl Hardwicke, Lady Amabel-Grey (1751-1833) and Lady Mary Jemima (1757-1830), depicted as children. On the left, the elder, Lady Amabel-Grey stands wearing an ermine trimmed coat, with a dove on her wrist, while her sister runs excitedly towards her, also clutching a dove and playing with their pet poodle. In the background is a wooded park, with a sphinx on a pedestal. In 1772 Lady Amabel-Grey married Lord Polwarth who died before his father the Earl of Marchmont, and in 1816 was created Countess de Grey in her own right. Her sister married the 2nd Lord Grantham, who died in 1786, and her eldest son succeeded to the titles both of Grantham and de Grey.
