Description
A decorative, delicately executed, half length portrait, enclosed in an oval with an architectural surround, of William Cavendish 1st Duke of Devonshire (1640-1707). He wears a huge periwig, lace cravat and armour. Statesman, politician, and soldier, he made an enemy of James II and subsequently supported the invitation to William and Mary. He is chiefly remembered as the builder of Chatsworth, and died at Devonshire House, Piccadilly.
