Daniel King (d. 1664), son of an baker of Chester, came to London about 1655. He soon became a friend and associate of Hollar, engraving much in Hollar’s style. Dugdale’s judgment in which he stated that King “was not able to write one word of true English, being a most ignorant, silly fellow, and moreover ‘an arrant knave”, seems harsh as his engraved work is both detailed and delicately executed. King seems to have made an unfortunate marriage, and after his wife had robbed and left him, he died heartbroken near York House, in the Strand, about 1664
