This portrait of the Flemish painter Adrian de Bie (1594-1661) formed part of a series of depictions of painters and sculptors which was initially published in Antwerp in 1649 under the title of "Images de Diverses Hommes D’Esprit," "Qui Par Leur Art et Science". In the somewhat confusing history of this publication, further editions appeared in the following years in both Holland and England with different titles such as, Het Gulden Cabinet and The Portraits of the most Eminent Painters. Each of these subsequent editions saw the inclusion of some new engravings and the deletions of others. Other prominent engravers who contributed portraits to the series included Wenzel Hollar, Paulus Pontius, Pieter de Jode and Jacob Neefs.
