Description

A half length portrait, enclosed in an architectural oval, of Marie Adelaide Clotilde de Bourbon (1759-1802), daughter of the Dauphin Louis de Bourbon and his wife Marie Josepha of Saxony, and sister of the martyred King Louis XVI. She is very elaborately dressed in an embroidered dress trimmed with large bows, with her hair dressed high. She has a plump face and bears a marked resemblance to her brother. In 1775 she married Carlo Emanuele IV of Savoy, who was subsequently deposed by Napoleon. She died at the age of 42 in 1802.
