A small, half length portrait, enclosed in an oval, of Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl of Strafford (1593-1641), Royalist statesman. Depicted here in armour, with a beard and a soft collar over his gorget. Principal friend and counsellor of King Charles 1st, he was much hated and blamed (unfairly) for the King’s obduracy. He was impeached by Pym and executed on Tower Hill on May 12th 1641.
