Captain John Harvey

A half length portrait set in a sqare border. Harvey, born 1740 and a captain in the navy, brother of Admiral Sir Henry Harvey joined the navy in 1755 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1759. Early in 1782 he was appointed to the Samson which formed a part of the Channel fleet and was present at the relief of Gibraltor. In 1793 he was appointed to the Brunswick under Lord Howe. On the 1st June 1794 she was the Queen Charlotte’s second astern and during an engagement with the French line the Brunswick was separated. During the forthcoming battle, during which the Brunswick was severely damaged with the loss of 44 men killed and 114 wounded, Harvey’s right hand was shattered by a musket-ball, afterwards he was stunned by a heavy splinter stricking him in the small of the back, and a round shot afterwards smashed his right elbow. He was landed at Portsmouth wehre he died on the 30th June. He was buried at Estree, but a monument jointly to his memory and that of Captain Hutt of the Queen, who also died of his wounds, was erected at the national expense in Westminster Abbey
