A rare, three quarter length, seated portrait of the beautiful Elizabeth Stephenson (d. 1821), wife of John Savile 2nd Earl of Mexborough. She is depicted seated against the base of a column, with a park in the background. She wears a wide brimmed hat, trimmed with feathers, over elaborately curled hair, with a lace trimmed gauze fichu over a dark dress. Daughter of John Stephenson of East Burnham, Buckinghamshire, she married the Earl of Mexborough in 1782, dying suddenly at her house in Piccadilly in June 1821.
