Henry, Earl of Pemroke & Mongonery

A handsome and nonchalant three quarter length portrait of Henry Herbert, 10th Earl of Pembroke and 7th Earl of Montgomery. He is depicted in Military uniform with his right hand resting on his sword. In the background cavalry can be seen preparing to charge into battle. Born in 1734, he traveled the continent in his youth, before being appointed coronet in his father’s regiment of the Dragoon Guards. He succeeded his father in 1750. In 1762 he published his ‘Method of Breaking Horses’, giving the various methods as practiced by the cavalry at that time. In the same year he caused a great scandal when he resigned his place at court before eloping with Miss Hunter, the daughter of Charles Orby Hunter. She had a child by him, but he returned to his wife and Miss Hunter went on to marry Sir Alured Clarke.
