Jacob van Schuppen (Scuppen) was born in Paris in 1670. He traveled to Vienna where he was employed as a portrait and history painter. He founded the academy in Vienna, and it is as its Principal he is here depicted. He is shown in a fur-lined robe, holding brushes and a palette in his left hand, a leaning stick in his right.
