Description

A rare portrait of Alderman Sir Robert Clayton (1629-1707). Clayton was MP for Blechingly, Surrey, as well as a prominent liveryman and championed the protestant Whig cause. He was made Lord Mayor of London in 1679. He was famously satirized by Dryden as Ishban. He died in 1707, aged 79. He is depicted half-length in a printed oval frame, which is decorated with medallions of the City’s Coat of Arms and his own. Beneath is the crossed Mace and Sword of the City of London, topped with an upturned fur cap.
