A street scene in Newmarket at race time, One man is booking a bet which he looks on as being a favourable one. On other looks on with a sour and disappointed expression, his hands thrust deep in his pockets. Over a casement behind is written Catchpenny Alley. The leg of a man, clad in a black stocking, perhaps suggesting the presence of a blackleg, is thrust from an adjoining window. Three dogs are barking at him. Another dog leaps at the wall trying to get at a dead goose whose neck hangs from the window. A rough sketch of a man hanging from the gallows is on the wall. , near it an inscription Whoso Lays – Will he Prose . To the left over a door is written No Thorough Fare Here.
