The interior of a poor families dwelling. The couple sit heads bowed down forlornly, their clothing torn and in disarray. A young boy is seated on the end of a barrel, he is chewing at a bone, his dog eagerly looking at him. A young girl with her back to us  is looking up at her mother , behind her a baby lies in a crib on the floor, again clothing in disarray.
