Description
The thin, elderly figure of Dr. John Shepherd (1759-1805), depicted in profile to the right, totters along holding his carved walking cane. He wears an ill fitting wig, creased coat and long wrinkled black clerical stockings. In 1782 he took deacon’s orders and in 1783 he was ordained priest. Early in 1785 obtained the curacy of Paddington, London and through his exertions the church was rebuilt between 1788 and 1791. He is principally known for his book Critical and Practical Elucidation of the Book of Common Prayer, published 1797. He subsequently retired to Bath and died at Stisted on 2nd May 1805. BM 11396
