Two ape-women, dressed in the height of the fashion, with enormous ribbon-trimmed hats, are fighting, but have been torn apart by ape-watchmen. Each is held round the waist by a watchman, but extends menacing claws. A third watchman, between the combatants, has been thrown to the ground, and springs his rattle. A fourth (left) rushes up. The watchmen are dressed in the usual way, with patched great-coats; the letters S N R on the back of a coat should indicate the wearer’s parish or group of parishes. All have expressive ape-faces.
