Description

A half length portrait of the distinguished naval officer Sir Alexander Schomberg (1720-1804). Captain of the Essex 64 guns, he married a Miss Chalmers of Essex in 1763, and died in Dublin, being then the oldest Captain in the Navy. The painting is still in the possession of the family. Hogarth has depicted Schomberg as having a plump, jowly face, wears naval uniform and carries his sword.
