A half length portrait, enclosed in an oval, of the Irish comic actor and dramatist Thomas Ryder (1735-90). He wears a red coat, embellished with gold buttonholes and tassels, a yellow satin waistcoat and holds a snuffbox in both hands. Under Henry Mossop he joined the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin, and temporarily revived the fortunes of the company when he took the role of Sir John Restless in All in the Wrong in 1770. He went on to play many of the great comic roles both in Ireland and London, and died at Sandymount, Dublin, and was buried in the churchyard of Drumcondra.
