A portrait of Herbert Phillip, Earl of Montgomery and fourth Earl of Pembrokeshire, 1584 – 1650. A favourite of King James I, who bestowed on him his favourite castle, Montgomery. He interested himself in New England and other colonial settlements, and was a member of council for the Virginia Company in 1612. In 1627/28 he received a grant of certain islands, called Trinidado, Tobago, Barbadoes and Fonseca. In 1630 he became fourth Earl of Pembroke.
