Portrait of the Baptist Minister John Ryland. He learnt Hebrew when only five years old and Greek when he was only nine, and by fifteen was teaching in his father’s school. He was minister of the Broadmead Chapel at Bristol and was active in founding the Baptist Missionary Society. Ryland’s reading was various and extensive, he was a profound oriental scholar and had a passion for natural history.
