A rare, half length mezzotint portrait of the handsome, arrogant figure of the statesman Sidney 1st Earl of Godolphin. He wears an enormous brown periwig, lace cravat and his Robes of the Garter, and carries a wand of office. A friend of the 1st Duke of Marlborough, with pronounced Jacobite sympathies, Godolphin is chiefly famous today for importing the Godolphin Arabian, one of the foundation sires of the modern throughbred horse.
