The Politician

Hogarth’s amusing sketch, originally executed for his friend Ebenezer Forrest (d. 1783). A bespectacled politician, possibly a portrait of a Mr Tilson a lacemaker in the Strand, sits at a table reading his newspaper so intently that he fails to notice that he has carelessly set fire to the brim of his tricorne hat with the candle which he hold in one hand.
