Description

A rare etching, showing the crowded interior of the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, during the magnificent installation as Chancellor of John Fane 7th Earl of Westmoreland (1682-1762). The aged Earl is shown seated in his robes and wig at the far end, while the Chaplain gives his sermon on the right. Many of the carefully delineated faces amongst the crowd are evidently portraits, while Worlidge has shown himself seated beside his wife and sketching in the Gallery on the right. His brother in law Alessandro Grimaldi is shown seated opposite on the left. Soon after his accession to the Earldom, Fane retired to his seat, Mereworth Castle in Kent, rebuilding the castle after a design by Palladio.
