Major-General Lord Cathcart stands stiffly in profile to the left. His features are blunt and ugly. He wears court dress with a military cast, heavily gold laced, and a long pigtail. His right hand rests on the head of a gold-headed cane. A figured carpet and bare wall complete the design.

Cathcart (1755-1843), a distinguished officer, vice-admiral of Scotland, Colonel of the 2nd Life Guards, succeeded Lord Amherst as Gold Stick in 1797
