The tall, fearsome figure of Dr. Francis Barnes, stands in profile to the right, wearing academic robes, bob wig, mortar board and bands. Master of Peterhouse from 1788, he also became Knightsbridge Professor of Moral Philosophy, but refused to give lectures. A contemporary described him as ‘a disreputable survival from the eighteenth century’ ! BM 11584.
