Cornelius de Visscher was born in Amsterdam about 1620. A pupil of Peter Soutman, he became a specialist in the engraving of Dutch genre scenes and pictures of animals. This portrait was engraved posthumously by benoit Audran (1698-1772), and published in Paris. The image depicts Visscher holding a plate and a burin in his right hand. The title would seem to suggest that Visscher was at some point resident in Haarlem.
