Description
An interesting portrait of the politician and admirer of John Wilkes, Robert Baldy (d. 1774). He has a square, thin lipped, smiling face, and wears a suit of sober dark clothes with brass buttons. Beneath the title is inscribed ‘An honest Man the noblest work of God. Ex dono Thomae Cowper Arm. Causa Amicitiae’. A resident of Northumberland Street, he left a legacy to Wilkes in consideration of the ‘persecution he endured from a most abandoned and profligate administration for the lst ten years’.
