Half length portrait in an oval border, depicting the sitter in steel armour, wearing a jewel-clasped cloak and his chain of order of the golden fleece. Born in 1669, the younger son of Louis VI, Landgrave Hesse-Darnstadt, he fought in Ireland for William III, before converting to Roman Catholicism and entering the service of Charles II of Spain. He died during an attack at Mount Joy, by Barcelona, 14th September 1705.
